visiting Kooragang Wetlands

 

The Ash Island site of Kooragang Wetlands is accessed by car, bicycle or foot via Ash Island bridge on the Pacific Highway at Hexham (see Gregory’s 25th edition Newcastle Street Directory (Map 265 D2). To get to Ash Island by public transport you can either catch a train (Hunter Line - Newcastle to Maitland), get off at Hexham Station, walk 2.5 km east along Pacific Highway to Ash Island bridge; or a bus (Newcastle to Raymond Terrace, Blue Ribbon 140) Ask driver to stop at Ash Island Bridge. Once you are on Ash Island call in at Kooragang Wetlands Information Centre (KWIC) for details of local conditions, activities and other information. 

KWIC is open 10am to 4pm weekdays and the third Sunday of the month.
Visitors are welcome to explore Ash island site unguided at any time with the assistance of informative signage and a brochure `Exploring Kooragang Wetlands'. Guided tours for school and other groups can also be arranged.

The Tomago site lies behind Tomago House off Tomago Rd, Tomago (see Gregory’s 25th edition Newcastle Street Directory (Map 236 H9). The area is not accessible by car (except upon prior arrangement) , but can be accessed on foot.

Stockton Sandspit High Tide Roost site lies on the north-western side of Stockton Bridge (see Gregory’s 25th edition Newcastle Street Directory (Map 298 K1). A carpark under the northern end of the bridge can be accessed via a track to the right immediately south of the turn-off to Stockton from the Pacific Hwy, Fern Bay.
